Theory: Understanding German Nouns & Gender

What is a noun? A noun names a person, object, abstract quality, or concept: a woman, a boat, friendship, democracy. Unlike English's "biological" gender (where things are "it"), German uses grammatical gender—every noun is either masculine, feminine, or neuter.
