Why separable verbs matter in medical German
In clinical conversations, doctors and patients use separable verbs constantly: a patient wakes up, a nurse looks after someone, a doctor writes out a prescription. Getting the prefix to the end of the clause is essential for fluent, professional German.
How separable verbs work
A separable verb has two parts: a prefix and a verb stem. In main clauses the prefix is separated from the conjugated verb and placed at the end of the clause.

Key rule reminders
- The conjugated verb stays in second position in statements.
- The prefix goes to the end of the clause.
- In questions, the verb comes first but the prefix still goes to the end.
- In subordinate clauses, the whole verb (prefix + conjugated form) moves to the end.
